Corporate Responsibility
Following the acquisition of its fuel efficient fleet of A320neo aircraft, to build on its corporate social responsibility, Air Seychelles has and continues to integrate sustainable practices in its day-to day operations, minimizing carbon footprints in the Seychelles environment and across its network.
Embedding the airline’s corporate social responsibility programme at home turf, Air Seychelles has named its two A320neo aircraft after two endemic birds currently listed as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The first aircraft delivered in January 2019 under registration S7-VEV is named after the bird 'Veuve' also known as the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone corvina) primarily found in the Veuve Special Reserve in La Digue, the third most populated island of the Seychelles. Over the past years, Air Seychelles has extended support to the Seychelles National Parks Authority and other responsible entities to save the species from extinction by flying these birds from Denis Private Island to Curieuse island as part of a project to start a new population of the flycatchers on the Island.
ReaffirmIng the airlines’ commitment in raising awareness about the Seychelles ecosystem and the importance of protecting its endemics for future generation, Air Seychelles named its second Airbus A320neo delivered in 2020 aircraft after another one of Seychelles critically endangered bird called ‘Pti Merl Dezil’ also known as the ‘Seychelles Warbler’.
Reclassified as ‘Near Threatened’ in 2014, following the increase in its population, to date ‘Pti Merl Dezil’ can be found on five granitic and coralline islands of the Seychelles including Cousine, Aride, Denis, Fregate as well as Cousin island, declared a nature reserve in 1968 to protect this species.
To attain the desired level of excellence in sustainability, Air Seychelles will continue to invest in the communities where the airline operates and programmes within the same portfolio as part of its continuous effort to raise awareness towards sustainable development and to safeguard the environment for generations to come.
